TRIO in New Bedford
In the New Bedford area, we are fortunate to have a number of federally-funded, TRIO programs; the Educational Opportunity Center, Upward Bound, Talent Search, and Student Support Services. The Educational Opportunity Center and Talent Search are programs of Seven Hills Behavioral Health, and Upward Bound and Student Support Services are programs of UMass-Dartmouth. TRIO programs help students overcome economic, social and cultural barriers to higher education.
As mandated by Congress, two-thirds of the students served by these programs must come from families with incomes within 200% of the poverty level for their family’s size, with neither parent having graduated from a four-year college. Additionally, students must demonstrate the potential to succeed in a post-secondary program, be a US citizen or permanent resident, be between the ages of 11 and 27 years, and be enrolled in or have dropped out of grades 6-12. Some restrictions apply for participation over the age of 19 years.
Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs (GEAR UP) in New Bedford
The GEAR UP program is designed to increase the number of low-income students who are prepared to enter and succeed in postsecondary education. GEAR UP provides services at economically disadvantaged middle and high schools. GEAR UP grantees serve a cohort of students beginning no later than the seventh grade and follow the cohort through high school. GEAR UP funds can also be used to provide college scholarships to low-income students. GEAR UP operates in two schools, Normandin Middle School and New Bedford High School.
